Project Description
The project aims to improve social political and economic conditions in four counties in the Upper Nile State of Sudan by addressing the vulnerability of internally displaced persons (IDPs) returnees and host communities and promoting their stability. The project seeks to achieve this outcome through activities in environmental conservation food security income generation capacity building of local NGOs and CBOs and water and sanitation. By improving household livelihood security and reducing water- related conflicts the project aids in the successful reintegration of returnees and supports the overall peace process in Sudan. Activities promote gender equality and environmental sustainability. This project is expected to benefit 16 000 households.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2012) include: (1) improvements in household food production for 14 042 households; (2) 51 income-generating associations were formed and increased participants’ income by an average of 17%; (3) 12 714 households gained access to clean water and sanitation facilities; and (4) 8025 trees were planted including fruit trees. These results have helped reach 145 710 individuals through: interventions in food security; income generation; capacity building of local organizations; water and sanitation services; and environmental conservation.
