Project Description
The Southern Sudan Healthcare Accessibility Rehabilitation and Education Project (SSHARE) seeks to support the improved health and integration of returnees and host populations by supporting essential medical facility rehabilitation and capacity building for medical personnel through activities in medical education and personnel support rehabilitation and equipping of medical facilities and the development of community medical outreach programs. These activities are carried out with an emphasis on gender equality and complement Samaritan's Purse's existing project involving the reintegration of Sudanese-Canadian doctors. The project activities contribute to the overarching goal of promoting greater stability in war-affected communities in Southern Sudan and long-term peace.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2013) include: (1) six health facilities were constructed and became operational in Bor County in Jonglei state which treated 27 852 patients; (2) 15 Sudanese-Canadian physicians (2 women and 13 men) were reintegrated into their host communities 14 of which were actively practicing medicine. All 15 physicians exhibited increased knowledge and skills in preventive medicine and rural-based primary health; (3) 60 healthcare workers (35% female) from multiple facility sites received ongoing training; and (4) 65 community members (25 women and 40 men) were involved in village health committees in three locations and reached over 1 500 women with workshops on reproductive health.
