Project Description
The Basic Service Provision and Recovery Interventions in the Highlands of Aweil East County project is promoting sustainable development through the provision of primary health care services; establishment and strengthening of health systems; increasing access to water and sanitation; and improving food security. This project aims to strengthen the position of local populations (estimated 124 000) to provide for and assimilate returnees (approximately 20 350); increase the capacity of government at the local provincial and state levels; and support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2012) include: (i) five basic health clinics received supplies and equipment as well as training for healthcare staff; (ii) 3 681 babies were delivered by trained traditional birth attendants or health workers; (iii) 5 405 women were given the tetanus toxoid vaccine to help prevent tetanus in the women and their unborn children; (iv) 636 latrines were constructed and 15 bore wells were drilled which enabled 27.3% of the targeted population to be within 30 minutes of a safe water source (up from 10.6% at the start of the project); (v) seeds and tools were distributed to 16 860 households and 8 vegetable gardens were established for dry season gardening which has enabled people to produce food throughout the hunger season; and (vi) 20 community livelihood groups were formed which have led to additional household income to cover expenses such as clothing and children’s school fees. These results have contributed to: (i) ensuring that 100 000 people had access to quality curative and preventative primary health care; (ii) reducing water-borne diseases by 6.6% since the start of the project by improving hygiene and sanitation; and (iii) improving food security by increasing people’s knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices which resulted in 30% more land being cultivated and 30% more agricultural production.
