Project Description

The goal of the project is to improve local development of the coastal people of Red Sea State in Sudan. The purpose of this project is to improve the income and livelihoods of the communities in the following ways: sustainable production and marketing of fisheries entrepreneurship development promotion of new businesses in the fisheries sector and related supporting activities particularly for women. Expected results include: established and strengthened capacity of fishing cooperatives and small scale enterprises as new market actors; enhanced capacity of staff to continuously train and provide support to the cooperatives; and increased capacity of small enterprises services providers to provide service such as ice production cold store maintenance service fish salting drying and packaging and maintenance of fishing boats and motors.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of April 2012 include: construction completed on three landing sites equipped for storage and processing of fish; three cooperatives strengthened and cooperative management trained in bookkeeping and management; and three women’s associations formed generating modest profits through five to six small enterprises each. Additionally the project has trained 20 extension workers; delivered two study tours for local officials and cooperative members to observe cooperatives in Uganda; and trained 30 people in global positioning systems (GPS) and new fishing technologies. These results have contributed to improved market infrastructure for fisheries products in Red Sea State as well as a strengthened market-oriented human resource base and more equitable access for women to the productive sector.
