Project Description
The project aims to reduce poverty among cereal and vegetable crop producers in the Segou Koulikoro Mopti and Sikasso regions of Mali by building the capacity of the following institutions responsible for representing and supporting producers: rural producer organizations regional chambers of agriculture and the Malian Permanent Assembly of the Chambers of Agriculture (MPACA). Project activities focus on the development of services adapted to the needs of producers the development of economic activities (especially improved marketing of agricultural products) and the improvement of the good governance of project partner organizations.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) cooperatives and related associations (C/AA) of cereal and market gardening producers have increased their capacity to make a sustainable contribution to food security in the regions of Ségou Koulikoro Mopti and Sikasso; (2) APCAM (Permanent Assembly of the Chambers of Agriculture of Mali) regional chambers of agriculture and service providers have supported targeted C/AAs in their contribution to food security in the regions of Ségou Koulikoro Mopti and Sikasso in an environmentally friendly manner and the promotion of equality between women and men; and (3) access to quality marketing infrastructure for members of producer C/AAs is improved.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2019) : (1) realized structural investments for now and for the future at a total cost of 2 billion CFA francs - approximately CAD $ 4.4 million; (of which 40% women). This allowed beneficiaries to engage in economic activities in their control including (1) building a high-quality storage infrastructure that meets environmental standards. This improved commercialization conditions for agricultural products including 12-grain storage structures with a total capacity of 10 700 tonnes and 37 storage bays for shallots with the capacity of 780 tonnes and (2) the creation of 6 processing centres (parboiling rice processing shallots and packaging sesame) and the provision of equipment for production and commercialization (such as threshing machines industrial screening machine tricycles racks and solar kits); (2) created 385 gender equality committees in 15 cooperatives and related associations; (3) women’s representation rose to 47% in cooperatives and associations (up 8%) to 37% on boards of directors (up 8%) and to 41% on supervisory boards (up 26%); (4)cooperatives and associations improved and more systematically applied internal regulations notably the tabling of financial statements at annual general meetings; and (5) over 65% of grassroots cooperatives registered under the act of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA) or submitted their file for processing.
