Project Description
The Food Emergency Social Program Support Project aims to respond to the current food crisis by improving the food security of the most vulnerable in the hardest-hit rural areas. The Project helps the Emergency Social Program to address food insecurity in Senegal and is implemented in cooperation with the United Nations World Food Programme. This project component supports the production of iodized salt in Senegal by giving salt producers and distributors access to the material and equipment needed for iodization. The project aims to ensure that the production of iodized salt meets 90 percent of Senegal’s needs.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by the end of the project (March 2012) include: (1) The project has supported 31 salt-producing groups and 184 556 metric tonnes of salt have been adequately iodized. (2) About 50 000 000 CFA francs (about $105 000) are available through the federation to replenish the KIO3 inventory (salt iodization). The results achieved by the project are helping to guarantee a better supply of basic food and to strengthen support for vulnerable groups from a nutritional and medical standpoint.
