Project Description
The Food Emergency Social Program Support Project aims to respond to the current food crisis by improving the food security of the most vulnerable in the hardest-hit rural areas. This project helps the Emergency Social Program to address food insecurity in Senegal and is implemented in cooperation with the United Nations World Food Programme. This project component aims to address the nutritional needs of 215 000 people including 27 500 malnourished children under five 8 500 malnourished pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers and 36 000 families in situations of acute food insecurity.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by the end of the project (March 2012) include: (1) The project has supported 31 salt-producing groups and 184 556 metric tonnes of salt have been adequately iodized. (2) About 50 000 000 CFA francs (about $105 000) are available through the federation to replenish the KIO3 inventory (salt iodization). The results achieved by the project are helping to guarantee a better supply of basic food and to strengthen support for vulnerable groups from a nutritional and medical standpoint.
