Project Description
This project aims to improve the social and economic well-being of communities living where there are extractive activities. The project provides resources to regional and municipal governments and their communities to improve their ability to identify plan and manage projects that contribute to local development. This project also supports partnerships that bring together governments communities civil society organizations and private sector companies to support local development. This project is part of the Andean Regional Initiative – Promoting Effective Partnerships for Local Development which also works in Bolivia and Peru. This project has three components:(i) institutional capacity building to help local governments plan manage and implement sustainable development investments and associated public services based on community needs; (ii) knowledge sharing to develop and share knowledge on corporate social responsibility methods results lessons learned and best practices; and (iii) setting up Local Funds that support local initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable community development in partnership with the private sector/extractive companies. To date there are six local development sub-projects being implemented through the Local Fund in Colombia.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of June 2017 include: 1) improved sustainable development opportunities for 180 pepper-producing families (900 people) in the municipality of Villagarzón Putumayo including (a) increased family incomes by 15.3% (b) gained 14 new buyers for their product and identified 80 potential clients and (c) provided 247 children with psychological support related to post-traumatic stress; (2) improved socio-economic development and support for the impact of migration for sugar cane producers artisanal jewelers and families in Quinchía Risaralda including (a) increased incomes for 164 families by 20% with sugar cane producers passing from an average monthly income of $246 in 2014 to $398 (b) replaced 18 local mills (trapiches) and improved the transportation of sugar cane increasing the processing plants’ annual sales by 13% and (c) worked with 150 youth and local schools promoting innovative initiatives related to sugar cane; (3) increased incomes for 300 rural families in Socha and Socotá by 20% and developments to dairy and forestry supply chains including (a) small investments to the families’ farms soil analysis and milking kits (benefiting 151 families) irrigation infrastructure (benefiting 30 families) plants and organic fertilizers (benefiting 89 families) and supply of seeds (benefiting 30 families); (b) the construction of 33 stables and nursery and the provision of 35 000 plants and trees to project beneficiaries; (c) increased membership in the dairy association from 25 to 92 members; (4) improved economic conditions for 2 120 small agricultural producers in the Magdalena Medio region including through (a) 1 531 families from five departments taking part in Corporacion PBA’s participatory rural development methodology; (b) 101 participatory research groups created (78 participatory local groups and 23 associations) related to value chains for bananas cacao corn guava tropical fruits rice and rubber; (c) 19 partnerships
