Project Description

The Basic Services Fund was a British initiative led by the Department for International Development (DFID). It aimed at providing basic services such as access to education primary healthcare water and sanitation to people living in areas of South Sudan where these services are mostly absent. Activities included the construction of classrooms boreholes latrines and clinics as well as the training of the staff at the State level in Southern Sudan. CIDA supported Phase II of the Basic Services Fund from January 2009 until September 2010. While Phase II is now over the Basic Services Fund continues to exist with additional phases.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved at the end of Phase II of the Basic Services Fund (September 2010) include: 31 primary schools (192 classrooms) built; 40 primary schools equipped with services (including furniture learning materials training and teachers’ salaries); the construction of five Primary Health Care Centres (PHCCs) and 15 Primary Health Care Units (PHCUs) completed. A further 25 PHCCs and 66 PHCUs were provided with services (including drugs training management support and complementary salaries where necessary); 143 boreholes drilled and 184 boreholes rehabilitated; 389 institutional latrines and 2 312 household latrines constructed The above results have contributed to an increase in the coverage access and use of basic services (primary education health and water & sanitation) for 1.6 million South Sudanese citizens.
