Project Description
The project goal is to contribute to poverty reduction and economic growth through inclusive responsible and accountable local governance and participatory community-led development. The program purpose is to improve access to locally and inclusively prioritised public goods and services. This is being achieved by investing in rural development mobilizing local resources and involving communities in local development and planning. Activities being supported include building roads irrigation systems and electrification systems which aim to reach all 3 915 villages in Nepal. The Local Governance and Community Development Program (LGCDP) is a national multi-donor program being implemented by the Government of Nepal's Ministry of Local Development.
Progress & Results Achieved
Local Governance and Community Development Programme 2013 Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2013) include: (i) implementing social mobilization in all 3 915 Village Development Committees (VDCs) of 75 districts in 50 municipalities to help communities advocate for more resources; (ii) establishing 4 265 Citizen Awareness Centres with more than 114 000 members (69% women) to bring together the community perspectives to soliciting for public services such as education health and drinking water at the VDC level; (iii) rolling out gender-responsive budgets in ten districts; (iv) providing training on child rights and gender equality to 4 136 people; (v) training 150 VDC staff in accounting software to improve data collection and analysis; (vi) completing 12 000 new or upgraded road projects to connect rural areas to local markets and completing 9 000 water supply and education projects benefitting nearly two million households; and (vii) setting up 26 000 Ward Citizenship Forums with 548 000 members (45% women 70% from disadvantaged groups) to bring community voices to soliciting for public services and resources at the ward level. These results are contributing to improving the inclusive and equitable delivery of basic services to villages and municipalities by local governments and increasing community-led economic growth.
