Project Description
The project aims to improve food security through sustainable farming activities that increase the income of the most vulnerable. The project has three components: food security improving agricultural performance and local governance and institutional support. The initiative aims to restart agricultural production and implement food security measures in local rural and suburban communities across six departments: Artibonite Nord Nord-Est Ouest Sud-Est and Centre. The project is implemented by existing partners (international and local non-governmental organizations as well as local and central governments).
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project include: ten small irrigation systems were rehabilitated and 21 561 hectares of agricultural land were developed. The production of cereals and vegetables increased by more than 150%. The yields for manioc and banana production tripled going from 10 to 30 metric tons and from 8 to 22 metric tons respectively due to the technical assistance and training provided. Haiti’s National Food Security Centre indicates that families’ dependence on purchasing food went from 85% on average in 2008 to 76% in 2010. Families received technology packages to help with agricultural and livestock production. In 15 communes 80 000 families or about 400 000 people directly benefited from these activities and about 265 000 people benefited indirectly. These results have contributed to increasing the incomes and food security or access to safe nutritious and sufficient food of families by enhancing small-scale agricultural production.
