Project Description

The project aims to increase incomes and improve livelihoods of 10 000 households by facilitating their participation in value chains in agricultural products and rural enterprise and by enhancing their access to better production techniques appropriate technologies improved input supplies and affordable support services including rural finance. Technical assistance training and mentoring is provided to key value chain actors including: farmers and handicraft textile producers private sector stakeholders that supply inputs and marketing services financial service providers and government organizations that provide support services such as agricultural extension and small and medium enterprise development. Activities include identification and implementation of market development models to link value chain actors to higher value markets. The project implements capacity-building programs to enable service providers and financial institutions to deliver support to clients on a sustainable basis.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2016) include: (1) substantial increases in beneficiary incomes with rice farmers successfully increasing their income by 99.9% and handicraft textile producers (weavers) successfully increasing their income by 58.7%; (2) rice farmers adopted new and improved practices which increased production including using new seeds practicing row planting and the proper use of fertilizer; and (3) weavers also adopted new and improved practices including better customer handling and new production techniques which led to greater income and market diversification. The project was successful in reaching a high number of beneficiaries: a total number of 10 394 farmers were reached by the project surpassing the overall project goal of 8 000 and a total number of 2 901 handicraft textile producers (weavers) were also reached surpassing the overall project goal of 2 000.
