Project Description

This project aims to improve the management and agriculture production of 1 400 parcels and farm management capacities of 1 400 young farmers and producers in northern Nicaragua. It aims to increase income reduce environmental vulnerability and increase food security of households occupying these parcels representing approximately 10 000 direct beneficiaries. Key components of this project are: (1) acquisition of new technical knowledge and skills by young farmers; (2) support to agricultural production and capitalization of production units; (3) development of transformation initiatives and marketing; (4) promotion of gender equality in rural areas; (5) strengthening the capacities of partners such as the National Institute of Technology (INATEC) and the Institute of Human Development (INPRHU).

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2016 include: Acquisition of new technical knowledge and skills by young farmers: (1) a total of 2 380 young participants (1 069 women and 1 311 men) were trained using the curriculum (44% of women); (2) 868 young participants graduated with a diploma (366 women and 502 men); (3) 1 833 families (77% of the target) put into practice eco-friendly practice on their family farm representing 25% of all family farm surface areas. Support to agricultural production and capitalization of production units: (1) the agricultural productivity of families increased 51% since the start of the project and 43.7% of families now have sufficient access to food even during the farming off-season through the diversification of their productions; (2) a total of 592 hectares (235 for women and 357 for men) were cultivated through agro-ecological practices; (3) 7 910 infrastructures were put in place with 2 636 young farmers (1 147 for women and 1 489 for men); (4) 982 environmental projects were established in 123 communities. Development of transformation and marketing initiatives: (1) a total of 1 749 young farmers (783 women and 966 men) implemented the full value of their production through transformation and marketing activities; (2) 441 young farmers (152 women and 282 men) started up 142 agricultural microbusinesses (3) 441 young farmers from 142 businesses raised income of US$189 269 (US$70 210 for women and US$119 059 for men) representing an annual average of US$441/young farmer a 286% increase over 2014–2015 (US$154/young farmer). Promotion of gender equality in rural areas: (1) 2 380 young farmers (1 069 women and 1 311 men) and their families 49 technicians and 70 interns (53 women and 66 men) were trained in gender equality; (2) 82% of young women (877 women out of 1 069) also worked on family farming units (a sharp increase from the 30% who participated in family farm activities at the start of the project); (3) 50% of 1 069 young wome
