Project Description
The project aims to increase sustainable economic activity and food security to poor regions in Cuba - specifically the provinces of Las Tunas Guantanamo and Pinar del Rio (heavily damaged by the hurricanes of 2008). Through the UNDP’s Local Human Development Programme the project contributes to improving economic opportunities and agricultural production and strengthening and accelerating decentralization programs of the Ministries of Economy & Planning and Agriculture. The project funds activities such as training support services and income- and production-generating activities for women and men of targeted poor communities.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of September 2013 include: 58 local stakeholders attended a course on business plans and one on local development management at the University of Pinar del Rio; 20 local entrepreneurs were trained to use tools for feasibility studies and business plans; 20 participants are attending a diploma course on Integrated Local Development Management in Guantanamo; 190 participants representing official provincial and municipal working groups in four provinces attended four provincial training workshops on the application of results-based management methodology in project management; an annual work plan for the Provincial Energy Commission of Pinar del Rio was designed; and 80 representatives of different sectors and institutions linked to the activities of the projects and local management development at the provincial level attended four awareness-raising workshops (conducted by the National Women's Studies Center) and one municipal thematic workshop on gender in Cienfuegos province. These activities contribute to building local capacity to plan and manage the social and economic development of poor communities in Cuba.
