Project Description
This project aims to develop and implement a "train-the trainer" program designed to work with parliamentarians in the Americas. The purpose of the program is to improve the quality and relevance of inter-parliamentary policy dialogue on democratic governance gender equality and sustainable development issues in the region. Through the creation of an independent network made up of the national legislatures of the 35 states of the Americas including Cuba this project also aims to increase the contribution made by legislatures to the Summit of the Americas process and to addressing issues of importance at the hemispheric level.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2013 include : Two training programs on the role of parliamentarians in budget oversight were delivered to 32 parliamentarians from throughout Central America and the Caribbean. Two workshops - one on trade and the Doha round of negotiations and one on parliaments and the extractive sector - were also delivered to 48 parliamentarians. In total 310 parliamentarians from 27 countries have participated in training activities and plenary sessions organized by ParlAmericas increasing the capacity of parliamentarians in the region to carry out their duties and contribute to policy dialogue on issues of hemispheric importance. ParlAmericas has also established a formal partnership arrangement with the Organization of American States which has created a framework for cooperation in areas such as democracy women's rights and the rule of law. A program aimed at strengthening representational institutions in Central America is currently being developed under this agreement.
