Project Description
This project aims to rehabilitate high-priority infrastructure and facilities damaged by the 2007 floods and cyclone Sidr. It enables people to resume their normal lives and reduce their vulnerability to future flood and cyclone damage. The project goal is to contribute to poverty reduction sustainable development and disaster risk reduction. Key project components include: i) Rehabilitating high-priority disaster-damaged facilities to restore access to social services and economic activities. ii) Restoring food security: using a rapid disbursement mechanism funds are provided to help the Government of Bangladesh finance imports of critical commodities and inputs including seeds and fertilizer. iii) Supporting capacity-building activities to increase Bangladesh's disaster preparedness and its capacity to mitigate damage from natural disasters. This includes adopting appropriate flood and cyclone-resistant design standards and improving early warning systems.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2011) include: (i) cost-effective disaster-proofing measures and design standards were adopted to minimize future flood and cyclone damage; (ii) 2 300 kilometres of roads (rural/municipal/national highways) were rebuilt; (iii) 96 kilometres of drains were covered; (iv) 2 000 meters of bridges/culverts were constructed; (v) 96 kilometres of road-slope protection was provided; (vi) 14 major bridges were rehabilitated or rebuilt to new standards; and (vii) in the period immediately following the 2008 cyclone emergency food rations were provided and seeds and fertilizer were distributed to farmers to allow them to immediately replant crops and prevent food shortages in the following year.
