Project Description

The project aims to improve the learning environment at 500 schools in four regions of Senegal. The project improves learning conditions (physical health and nutrition). The project also aims to improve the quality of education by incorporating everyday life skills in teaching and by establishing strong linkages between schools and communities. This project supports the implementation of the Government of Senegal's Ten-year Education and Training Plan.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2013) include: (1) installing or rehabilitating 426 water points (equipped with hand pumps) and 824 separate sanitary facilities (equipped with washstands) to improve learning and health conditions for girls and boys; (2) distributing 50 solar kits (for solar lighting of classrooms) and 500 sanitation and hygiene kits (including soap a small watering can for the bathroom bandages disinfectant de-wormer and Vitamin A supplements) and gardening kits (including a watering can shovel rake and seeds); (3) providing food rations three times a week disinfestation services and Vitamin A nutrition supplements (thanks to cooperation between the World Food Programme and Counterpart International) to improve the health of pupils; (4) providing life skills training and improved teaching approaches and classroom practices for 2 580 teachers (20% of them women) and 500 principals (both women and men); (5) establishing school governments and parliaments at 500 target schools; (6) creating 438 school management committees and training 3 066 members of these committees in community mobilization techniques and maintaining equipment and infrastructure; and (7) strengthening ties between communities and schools by involving parents of pupils more closely in monitoring infrastructure maintenance work putting up fences to protect schoolyards planting school gardens and monitoring school attendance by pupils in general and girls in particular. These results helped to improve the physical learning environment at 451 schools benefiting 75 187 pupils including 36 332 girls. Overall the project contributed to improving the quality of education increasing regular attendance by pupils and improving the health of students due to better sanitary facilities and a better diet.
