CIDA's contribution strengthens the ability of the Government of National Unity and the Government of South Sudan to meet their peace agreement commitments through increased support for the support for the national elections in 2010 and a 2011 referendum on the future of Sudan.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results at project end (June 2011) include: the delivery of a nationwide civic and voter education campaign with regionally-tailored materials such as posters stickers and t-shirts reaching more than 3 million people across Sudan and the training of 122 civil society organizations (CSOs). These activities have contributed to an enhanced understanding of elections a relatively high voter turnout (with women representing about 60% of voters) and enhanced capacity of CSOs to deliver civic and voter education. The capacity of the elections management bodies to deliver elections has been improved through the training of over 122 100 elections and polling staff and the procurement and transport of over 135 million ballot papers and 119 000 ballot boxes. The ability of democratic actors to participate in the electoral process has been enhanced through the training of 350 journalists 34 000 police personnel 100 judges and 250 legal personnel.
