Project Description

This project provides reintegration assistance and improved standards of living for 25 000 returnees people who were refugees but who recently returned to their homes and host populations in 15 communities of Aweil East Aweil North and Aweil West counties in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state. Improvements to the communities’ basic infrastructure are accomplished through water projects construction/rehabilitation of physical infrastructures (such as health facilities markets and schools) livestock distributions and capacity-building activities. This project aims to increase access to safe drinking water for returnees and host populations; improve access to primary education for at least 800 pupils; and improve living conditions through the implementation of livelihood interventions such as vocational training cash grant programs fisheries shelter assistance and the distribution of livestock seeds and tools.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2009) include: (1) 23 new boreholes with hand pumps were drilled 20 existing boreholes were rehabilitated and 12 hand-dug wells were built giving 35 000 people access to safe drinking water; (2) 65 gender balanced village water committees were established and members were trained in water maintenance; (3) 800 children were registered at school following the construction of a high school classroom in Mayen Ulem county; (4) six Women’s Centres were rehabilitated and two new Centres were constructed offering training in embroidery bread making and agriculture techniques to more than 4 000 people; (5) 843 women attended literacy and numeracy training in the newly established Women’s Centres empowering them to run income-generating activities; and (6) 1 003 women received tools and vegetable seeds and were trained in vegetable production to increase food security during the rainy season. These results supported the effective and sustainable reintegration of 35 000 returnees and existing community members (surpassing the target of 25 000) in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state through improved access to primary education improved living conditions especially for female-headed households and increased local capacity to manage water resources within communities.
