Project Description
This project aims to promote sustainable and equitable growth and improved quality of life for Tanzanians. It continues support to the World Bank mechanism that provides direct financing in the form of general budget support to Tanzania's national budget to assist the Government of Tanzania to implement its National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty. The project is designed to support activities such as: preparation and enactment of new legislation (e.g. Audit Bill Environmental Management Act); development and maintenance of infrastructures such as rural roads and irrigation systems; training and recruitment of teachers and health professionals; procurement of equipment and supplies including medicines and learning materials; reform of the public service pay and allowances structures; and the establishment of more transparent and accountable systems for sustainable national resource management.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of the end of the project (August 2010) include: Contribution to impressive economic growth rates of between 5% and 7% per annum during the period 2000 to 2008 while maintaining reasonably low inflation. The project has also contributed to increased government spending and improved outcomes in the social sectors including health education and water as well as improved governance and transparency on the part of the Tanzanian Government. In education net enrolment rates for primary schooling of boys and girls increased from 58.8% to 97.3% between 2000 and 2007. The percentage of the population with improved water access increased from 32% to 55% between 1990 and 2006. In health under –five mortality rates have declined by 25% since 2000. Deaths per thousand live births have dropped from 99 to 68 over the same period. Tanzania's ranking in the World Bank's overall Policy and Institutional Assessment (CPIA) rating has remained at 4 for the past five years while its governance rating has remained at 3.8.
