Project Description
This project promotes the long-term reintegration of Sudanese returnees through increased access to basic education while improving the overall quality of learning and the capacity of the education system in various conflict-affected communities in Greater Kordofan. This project aims to increase access to quality education for 25 000 children including 10 000 girls in Greater Kordofan by 2009. It also enhances community engagement in the education process on project sites and results in safe and gender-sensitive schools that can be replicated in other communities. These schools demonstrate how learning environments can become more secure and promote the protection and well-being of male and female learners.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 31 2011 include: the training and capacity building of 228 teachers 143 Parent Teacher Associations and 571 children on Student Representative Councils. In Abyei specifically 57 Parent Teacher Association members and 108 student representatives participated in training and Student Representative Councils were established in 11 schools. Insecurity and an extended rainy season created challenges in accessing the many project sites however the project has achieved results contributing towards strengthening access to basic education and helping to reduce the barriers that prevent girls from enrolling in school.
