Project Description

The Support to Zero Malnutrition Program project supports the Government of Bolivia in its commitment to eradicate malnutrition in children under two years of age and to greatly decrease malnutrition in children under five years of age and in pregnant women. The project contributes to one of the Government of Bolivia's cornerstone programs the Zero Malnutrition Program. There are three components to the project. This component focuses on developing the knowledge of families and their communities about appropriate nutritional practices. It also contributes to strengthening public health institutions through training for health personnel and the purchase of basic medical equipment. Finally UNICEF strengthens the capacity of the targeted population municipal authorities and water committees to better manage use and operate water and sanitation services.

Progress & Results Achieved

In the 52 municipalities targeted by the program results from the overall Zero Malnutrition Program as of December 2010 include: 69.9% of pregnant women received a complete iron supplement treatment compared with 50.8% in 2008 helping to reduce the incidence of mental impairment; 75% of children aged 6-11 months were provided with Vitamin A supplementation helping to reduce the incidence of measles blindness and death. More importantly the percentage of children's deaths due to severe malnutrition was reduced from 9% in 2008 to 6.9% in 2009. The project has also allowed for the improvement of nutrition services offered by the Ministry of Health and Sports. In the water sanitation and hygiene component managed by UNICEF the project implemented 23 safe water projects providing potable water to 14 municipalities and 86 sanitation projects (toilets and showers) that will benefit 7 741 people.
