Project Description
With this project Save the Children Canada and the Norwegian Refugee Council support the implementation of four pedagogical models. Three of the models relate to alternative educational opportunities for out-of-school indigenous Afro-Colombian displaced and generally vulnerable children youth and adults: Learning Circles High Schools for Peace and Integral Literacy for Adults. The fourth model relates to direct intervention in public schools: the Child-Centered Educational Model. All activities are developed in five municipalities of the Nariño Department which borders on Ecuador and is an emerging area of conflict. Boys girls youth and adults receive high-quality relevant education appropriate to their needs which means they develop abilities and skills to: understand their reality and redefine their personal goals; effectively communicate and deal with conflicts in a civil manner; and take part in public affairs and contribute to strengthening democracy and peace.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of March 2012 include: 2 268 conflict-affected and vulnerable children and youth and 580 adults have accessed alternative flexible educational models; a total of 993 teachers have been trained to teach alternative flexible models. Also through training received by the project 1786 teachers in conventional public schools are now effectively implementing new educative practices thus enhancing the quality of education available.
