Project Description
The goal of the project is to implement development initiatives that improve the quality of life and security in the Bel Air neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince The project increases the community's supply of clean drinking water raises awareness of public health issues and HIV/AIDS prevention establishes a solid waste management system and supports neighbourhood youth in finding alternatives to gangs crime and violence.
Progress & Results Achieved
The project ended in summer 2011. Among the health results achieved during the project students in the Bel Air neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince had greater access to health services with a monthly average of 680 schoolchildren being examined and treated free of charge at the Viva Rio medical clinic. Education results include: almost 800 youth had improved access to education as a result of education grants awarded through the “Peace and Security in Bel Air” program. Water and sanitation results include: a new water catchment system increased the available drinking water in Bel Air by 40% enabling 19 500 people to receive drinking water daily from water outlets built and/or rehabilitated by Viva Rio.
