Project Description

This project provides strategic and flexible support to key partners in private sector development and governance in Nicaragua to implement the Accra Agenda for Action relating to aid effectiveness. The Accra Agenda for Action endorsed on September 4 2008 by donor nations developing countries and international development institutions is a follow-up to the 2005 Paris Declaration agreements on aid effectiveness. The goal of this project is to accelerate progress toward the Millenium Development Goals in Nicaragua through more effective use of aid resources. It works through the harmonization or aid effectiveness committees in Nicaragua to support a complementary agenda of strategic actions that facilitate the transition to new aid architecture. This is achieved through targeted technical assistance the development and dissemination of case studies regional lesson-learning events and skill development and training for government and civil society personnel.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2013 include: Two major sub-projects were successfully implemented. Sub-project 1: 30 gender equality units were created to integrate gender practices across 30 Government of Nicaragua institutions; and 147 staff members from these 30 institutions benefitted from gender training. The sub-project also helped establish a gender framework to guide the implementation of Nicaragua’s Gender Equality Policy throughout its institutions. This is helping civil servants promote gender equality in decision-making as well as policy and program design. Sub-project 2: training was provided to Ministry of Agriculture staff on budgeting planning and financial accountability; and the Ministry’s information systems were upgraded. This is contributing to improved coordination between donors and the Ministry of Agriculture for the effective implementation of the Productive Rural Development Sector Program by the Government of Nicaragua.
