Project Description
This project provides support and improves the quality of life for landmine victims in targeted Sudanese communities through several interventions including emergency and continuous medical care physical rehabilitation prostheses and assistive devices psychosocial support employment and economic empowerment advocacy legislation and public awareness. These interventions aim to increase access to quality medical physical rehabilitation and social services for landmine victims and persons with disabilities with special attention given to the needs of women and girls. It also increases economical empowerment of landmine victims gained through a reduction in stigma at the community level toward landmine victims and persons with disabilities and increases employment opportunities.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project include: Through the Medical Care Development International Organization 738 women and men benefited from the South Sudan Rehabilitation Project. 85 beneficiaries have been involved in a farmer cooperative initiative to integrate and support victim assistance households. In addition the Economic Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PWD’s) initiatives provided all 60 beneficiaries with in-kind donations to start their Income Generating Activities. In collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Child and Social Welfare and the South Sudan Demining Authority a Landmines/UXO Victim/Survivors Association has been established throughout South Sudan. As a result empowerment of mine and Remnants of War (EWR) victims through training networking and legal services constituted a new approach to target thousands of mine/ERW victims and PWD’s.
