Project Description
This project contributes to a reduction in the number of injuries and deaths resulting from explosions of landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXOs) through the provision of mine risk education and the promotion of safe behaviour among at-risk groups in Sudan thereby enabling these communities to reduce the risks associated with living in landmine-affected areas. This initiative aims to increase knowledge of the dangers of mines and UXOs within landmine-affected communities; increase access to data on landmine victims generated through health facilities in five affected states; increase the ability of national mine action centres and local nongovernmental organizations to implement and manage mine risk education projects/activities; and improve the capacity of teachers to deliver mine risk education programs within their schools.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results a project end (March 2010) include: 1 218 979 individuals were reached directly through mine risk education (MRE) or awareness-raising activities on the risks of landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXO). Consequently an estimated indirect audience of 3.45 million people was reached in the whole of Sudan through a combination of trickle down effects public presentations and MRE displays. 3 023 teachers and master-teachers received MRE training. Advocacy work and training by UNICEF has significantly contributed to increased knowledge of the dangers of mines and UXO on the part of the population and has strengthened the capacity of national authorities and national MRE actors to manage and implement MRE activities in Sudan including the integration of MRE into school curricula.
