Project Description

The Public Service Reform Program is designed to ensure the delivery of quality timely efficient public services; the implementation of appropriate public policies; and the establishment of a sound environment for private sector growth and social development. It contributes to improving the delivery of public services such as education health land management support to agriculture water and electricity to the Tanzanian population by strengthening the capacity performance and accountability of government Ministries and public service personnel. This is a Government of Tanzania-led initiative with support from Canada and other donors.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project include: (1) The government electronic portal was launched as part of the Open Government Initiative and provides the public with easy access to information on land registration a company registration database and a government directory; (2) The construction of the National Records Centre (NRC) was completed and approximately 4 000 boxes of files were transferred and filed in the NRC generating cost-savings for rental space equivalent to US$3.6 million per year; (3) a staff recruitment retention and promotion tool was implemented in 66% of government ministries; (4) 373 government staff and officers were trained on human capital information systems to improve supervisory and human resource management skills; (5) Over the past 5 years the program sponsored postgraduate degrees at Tanzanian universities for 237 women; (6) a complaints handling mechanism was implemented and resulted in the resolution of 77% of citizens ‘complaints. These results contributed to the improved delivery of quality timely and efficient public services in Tanzania.
