Project Description

The project aims to support the Government of Senegal in developing a national geomatics plan while building its capacities to retrieve process analyze and disseminate information needed for sound decision making. The project aims to improve Senegal's territorial administration by using geomatics as a tool for good economic and social governance. The project's key outputs include establishing a topographic database; training key staff to acquire manage use and disseminate data; and supporting the development of the national geomatics plan.

Progress & Results Achieved

The National Geomatics Plan Senegal project attained all of the anticipated immediate results for the entire project. Results achieved as of March 2015 include the following: (1) a strategic framework was created for the development and use of geomatics (Senegal National Geomatics Plan — PNG) officially submitted to Senegalese authorities in October 2012; (2) a permanent station that receives satellite-transmitted data from the satellite-based Global Positioning System was established a first in Africa. This station links Senegal to the Global Positioning System helping to establish a solid and modern foundation for mapping and property rights; (3) a team of Senegalese specialists (14 people) was trained on managing the station; (4) more than a hundred decision makers ministry staff and other resource persons were trained on geomatics; (5) an inter-institutional geomatics coordination and collaboration group (GICC) was established to ensure collaboration and coordination; (6) National Geomatics Days with over 300 participants were organized and a leaflet on the Géo-Répertoire was produced as well as a film on the PNG to promote the importance of geomatics in policy decision making; and (7) the geo-repertoire was put in place from the GéoSénégal website. These results help to build the Government of Senegal’s capacity to process and use geomatic information and thus to improve land-use management.
