Project Description
This project aims to support the December 2008 presidential and parliamentary elections by contributing to the Ghanaian CSO ABANTU for Development's efforts to bring women more fully into the election process both as candidates and as voters. It does this through activities such as working with political parties on putting women candidates forward training women candidates and organizing media campaigns and media sensitisation programmes.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results at end of project included enabling 164 women and 99 men to attend two-day workshops on various topics related to women’s participation in the December 2008 national elections. These workshops covered issues such as elections reporting and promoting women’s leadership. A number of one-day public fora on women’s participation in national elections were also supported attended by 1 591 women and 756 men. Discussion focused on the need to ensure peaceful elections convincing the public of the importance of voting campaigning for women parliamentary candidates and visibility of women voters. Additionally three national TV campaigns in four languages were aired from November 18 to December 4 to help publicize women’s participation in politics elections and the Parliament. Two community-based radio campaigns were also carried out from November 18 to December 2 in ten languages on women’s participation in elections. Both of these campaigns carried the same messages to different audiences.
