Project Description
The Poverty Reduction Support Credit is a World Bank mechanism that provides direct financing in the form of general budget support to Tanzania's national budget to assist the Government of Tanzania to implement its National Strategy for Growth and the Reduction of Poverty. The Poverty Reduction Support Credit is provided within the partnership framework between Tanzania and a group of 13 donor countries and international organizations that provide general budget support to the Government of Tanzania. It covers six areas of focus: growth and the reduction of income poverty improvements to quality of life and social well-being governance and accountability macro-economic stability resource allocation and budget consistency and public financial management. CIDA works closely with the World Bank other donors and the Government of Tanzania to monitor progress and achievement of results.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2008) include: Government of Tanzania increased allocations to social sectors at both the central and local government levels; improved pay administration particularly for teachers; over 3 500 health care workers recruited in 2006-2007; over 93 000 HIV/AIDS patients on anti retroviral treatment; over 9 820 new teachers in secondary education; enactment of the new Prevention and Combating of Corruption Law.
