Project Description
This project aims to reduce poverty and improve stability in selected communities of the border region by supporting locally-identified development initiatives to: (1) increase access to small-scale social services (health education); (2) improve small-scale local infrastructure (schools health clinics water canals/drainage ditches); and (3) provide improved socio-economic opportunities for the poor (improved irrigations construction of market roads.) The project is a locally-managed fund responding to small funding requests from locally-based Pakistani non-governmental organizations to assist in building capacity locally. These organizations are well-acquainted with the socio-cultural and rural development challenges of the area. International organizations and Canadian executing agencies are eligible only if they work in partnership with a local organization.
Expected Results
The expected results for this project include: (1) better infrastructure for the delivery of social services and productive activities; (2) improved quality of life in targeted districts; and (3) improved capacity among non-governmental and community-based organizations to implement community-driven development projects.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of end of project (September 2015) include: (1) improved supply of drinking water for more than 4 600 people; (2) increased sources of income for 2 735 women and increased nutrition for 1 160 women in the districts of Pishin Hanna and Quetta; (3) 350 youths (200 male and 150 female) from universities in Balochistan participated in a dialogue forum on the need for inclusive participation in political processes; (4) 64 primary schools one secondary school five high schools and six colleges were improved through rehabilitation in District Killa Abdullah Pishin Chaghai and Quetta benefitting over 13 000 students; (5) business skills of 1 175 women were improved through training in maintaining the quality of products developing links with markets and operating as enterprise groups; and (6) 170 women started their own income generation activities (for the first time) after they were provided with vocational skills training and tool kits in Quetta and Pishin Districts. These results have contributed to poverty reduction and democratic development in the Balochistan province. This fund supported 53 sub-projects which responded to: improving school infrastructure; teacher training; reproductive health capacity building; improving water supply for drinking and irrigation; training of youth on peace and pluralism which touched on the topics of violence against minorities and women; the economic empowerment of women in rural communities; addressing issues of juveniles in jails; protective services for child sexual abuse survivors; early and forced marriage; and improving and organizing communities.
