Project Description
The project aims to strengthen local community-based organizations to assist their communities in a variety of ways i.e: to effectively advocate for poor and marginalized households; to expand economic activities; increase family income and health; address discrimination and rights barriers; improve access to basic services; facilitate dialogue within communities to increased social cohesion to prevent and resolve conflicts within the village and with other villages; as well as to plan for emergencies and respond to natural and human-induced disasters affecting the community. The project targets smallholder farmers poor fisher households and households that depend on daily wage labour for their livelihoods in 150 communities within Jaffna and the Northern and Eastern parts of the country. Special attention is given to ensuring that women-headed households and unemployed youth are included in project activities. The partnership strategy not only aims to involve participants and beneficiaries throughout project development and implementation it also aims to empower them to identify their own constraints and opportunities set priorities and develop projects for resolution.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of July 2011 include: 39% of participating villages are interacting more frequently for business or social occasions demonstrating increased socio-economic cohesion; participating villages developed 95 linkages with formal institutions for livelihood purposes e.g. established connections with local banks attended poultry training registered for micro-finance activities; project local initiative groups strengthened their capacity to address social issues (e.g. health issues alcoholism budgeting land disputes water issues) as well as to practice inclusive decision-making within communities; household incomes of village loan recipients increased by 26% from October 2008 - March 2010 due to the expansion or beginning of new livelihood activities; livelihood options for project participants expanded to include non-seasonal and value-added initiatives such as non-farm labour inland fishing animal husbandry and collection of non-timber forest products. Approximately 71 650 project participants have benefitted from the above socio-economic interventions.
