Project Description
CIDA's contribution supports the implementation of the Government of Rwanda's Education Sector Strategic Plan through the Joint Education Sector Support mechanism. CIDA supports the key priorities in basic education enhancing access and equity improving quality and relevance and developing the capacity of the education system particularly at the district community and school levels.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2009 (end of project) include: The government has fast-tracked the implementation of the nine-year basic education policy since 2007. The policy provides compulsory and free nine-year basic education to all Rwandan school-age children. In this context as of July 2009 3 072 new classrooms were built to provide space. In 2009 the completion rate for primary education has increased from 52 % to 75 %. Education quality standards have been published and are being distributed to all users. Also 196 teachers were trained in special needs education. The Girls' Education Strategic Plan has been validated with all stakeholders and the Girls' Education Policy has been disseminated at the district level. Thirty directors in charge of education at the district level were trained in using new inspection sheets. Eighty-eight teacher trainers were trained in mathematics and science.
