Project Description
The purpose of this project is to assist poor rural communities and households in four union councils of District Abbottabad (North West Frontier Province) affected by the October 2005 earthquake in South Asia. The project aims to support and enable community-led reconstruction activities that lead to sustainable and equitable economic and social development. The project is designed to establish and engender sustainable livelihoods improve food security and well-being and prepare communities and households for future natural disasters with a focus on vulnerable groups such as women and single-parent households. The project's key elements include: enhancing sustainable livelihoods for targeted households and vulnerable groups; undertaking environmentally and economically sustainable community-based natural resource management; ensuring community infrastructure is in place to support sustainable and equitable economic development; improved and equitable food security and well being of households; and enhanced community-led disaster preparedness and humanitarian response.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2012): The overall beneficiary base for the project activities is 5010 ultra poor households (called “partner” households) in 93 villages in 4 Union Councils comprising 6 732 men 6 768 women and 8 917 children. Besides the partner households the community level activities particularly community physical infrastructure benefited total 3 178 non partner households (4 565 men 4 587 women and 6 102 children). Data collected by the project indicates that all 5 010 households have increased their natural physical social financial and physical asset base from the baseline situation as a result of project interventions. A total of 30 332 community members (15 747 women and 14 485 men) benefitted from infrastructure schemes. The project interventions for disaster preparedness have successfully created awareness among the community members especially in the prioritized 42 most vulnerable villages. In 31 Gender sessions a total of 590 women and 283 men were provided awareness on gender equality (67% women). Access of women to markets and services increased. In addition access to services for 90 disabled people (48 men and 42) has improved. Awareness about climate changes its effects and mitigation measures were disseminated to 70 (45 men & 25 women) community partners through 3 awareness sessions. 1 205 women have access to horticulture and forestry initiatives. Overall 101 Project Implementation Committees were formed over the project period. Total members are 1 111 (27% women). These committees are functional and managing to sustain the infrastructure projects. 42 Disaster Management plans were prepared through the involvement of 1 009 women and 1 220 men. 42 villages have tool kits to respond to disasters. A number of villages have operationalized their plans by mitigating potential hazards in their villages.
