Project Description
The goal of the project is to support the Government of Malawi in improving the quality and relevance of basic education in Malawi. The project aims to increase the capacity of teachers to apply new learner-centered gender sensitive teaching methodologies as well as methods of continuous assessment of student performance. It also aims to increase the supply of qualified teachers particularly women in primary schools across Malawi especially in rural areas.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of project activities included: (1) a 32% increase in the intake of new primary teachers; (2) over 6 000 new teachers (54% female) were trained through the program; (3) an additional 5 860 former graduates of the program were trained in the new primary curriculum; and (4) five teacher-training colleges were equipped with wireless internet computers printers photocopiers laboratory equipment library textbooks and furniture. These results have contributed to increasing the supply of qualified primary school teachers in Malawi.
