Project Description
The project supports the Government of Nepal in its movement towards democracy with specific initiatives that enable the population to actively participate in the upcoming election of a Constituent Assembly and the drafting of a new Constitution. The project is being implemented by three Canadian organizations and is focusing on three key areas: civic education local conflict resolution and media training. The initiative aims to provide greater and improved access to information understanding of rights surrounding the election and increased ability of Nepalis to participate in informed debate related to the elections.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2011) include: 95 000 copies of 5 types of community-friendly materials on constitutional issues were developed and disseminated across the country; over 900 Nepali Bar Association Members and 500 community service organization representatives within 72 of 75 districts as well as justice system stakeholders provided recommendations on the new constitution; numerous news articles radio broadcasts magazine articles highlighting the roles of the Nepali Bar Association and civil society in peace and constitution-making processes were disseminated widely; 93% of workshop participants surveyed indicated an interest in continuing to monitor issues through various media and increased knowledge of the roles and expectations of elected officials. As a result of increased awareness citizens have held the government more to account for integrating popular citizen demands and issues into the new constitution.
