Project Description
This project builds on achievements accomplished in a previous project called Environmental Management and Capacity Development. It is community- and private-sector-oriented. It aims to support the poorest segments of Guyana's population namely the rural poor and hinterland populations. The goal of the project is to promote private-sector-led economic growth that provides sustainable livelihoods and reduces poverty. Improvements to the health skills and economic opportunities of miners and the men women and families in selected communities living near mining operations are also targeted through this project.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2011 include: Economic diversification with the introduction of businesses in the mining and non-mining field has been enhanced in the communities of Mahdia and Isseneru with the construction of a plant nursery. For instance in Mahdia students from the secondary school produced compost for local gardens and the women's group sold vegetable crops to the mining camps and in Isseneru they were able to sell fresh vegetables to miners. Conditions in communities and in mines has improved for men and women: for example in Bushlot (Coastal village) and Mahdia (Hinterland) the introduction of Bti larvicide has assisted with the reduction of breeding grounds for malaria transmitted through mosquitoes.
