Project Description
The purpose of this project is to improve food security or access to safe nutritious and sufficient food for communities by supporting market garden production in Les Niayes and rice production in Casamance (in the Anambé River watershed). More specifically the project aims to: (i) build the technical capacities (production processing marketing) and organizational capacities of producers both women 1and men; (ii) build production capacity especially by making inputs available and developing infrastructures; and (iii) further develop products through better knowledge of the market and by making processing packaging and transportation equipment available.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by the end of the project (May 2012) include: (1) a complete study on restructuring the Niayes and Casamance irrigation system was completed; (2) micro-irrigation trials were carried out in five regions of the country covering a total of 14.5 hectares and a land development proposal in four other regions (for a total of 32 hectares) was submitted; (3) construction of over 35 km of roads was completed; (4) three contracts to refurbish the irrigation system at Beer Thialane were signed which should allow the irrigation of 2 500 hectares; and (5) extensive work was done to rebuild a dam (Beer Thialane) in the Niayes. Project results helped improve private irrigation and increase the access of Senegalese agricultural products to domestic and international markets.
