Project Description

This governance project involves strengthening the capabilities of the Regional Association of Oil and Natural Gas Companies in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARPEL) member companies to deal with key governance issues in the oil and gas sector in Latin America including social issues such as corporate social responsibility relations/conflicts with indigenous people/communities gender ethics transparency and accountability community development and human rights. The goal of this initiative is to promote good governance practices in the oil and gas sector in the Latin American and Caribbean Region. Project activities are carried out through workshops regional and national fora development of policies/guidelines/best practices and direct technical assistance. Government industry and civil society personnel are trained on good governance practices and are exposed to successful international experiences and models. The outcomes include ARPEL member companies implementing corporate social responsibility and governance practices in their daily operations

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2012) include: State-of-the-art guidelines to promote effective Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the oil and gas sector in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region were developed. An innovative CSR Management System to assist member companies of the Regional Association of Oil and Natural Gas Companies in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARPEL) to implement their CSR obligations was developed. The System includes a series of guidelines manuals and tools in such areas as ethics and corporate values human rights stakeholder engagement corporate governance and transparency and community relations and sustainable community development. The CSR system has resulted in a consistent and harmonized CSR approach in the sector throughout the LAC region. The project is contributing to increasing the ability of ARPEL member companies to manage and incorporate CSR into their management systems. The Project is also strengthening the ability of ARPEL member companies to carry out environmental auditing emergency response planning and oil spill contingency planning and response.
