Project Description
The goal of the National Civic Education Program Phase II (NCEP II) is to strengthen democratic development in Kenya by improving citizens' awareness of their rights and responsibilities through adult education. NCEP II is implemented by four consortia consisting of 42 civil society organizations which specialize in the areas of democratic development good governance human rights nation-building and constitutional reforms. Gender equality and HIV/AIDS prevention are crosscutting themes for all of these organizations.
Progress & Results Achieved
As of June 2011 over 50 civil society organizations' initiatives have been funded. Results include: 11 million people reached by NCEP initiatives; all 50 organizations improved their ability to address gender equality issues; 56 print advertisements and 28 articles published; 26 TV programs and 182 hours of radio programming aired; and 154 infomercials produced in 10 local languages aired country-wide. Civic education efforts were critical to peaceful national referendum which saw 66.9% of voting Kenyans support the new Constitution.
