Project Description
The goal of this project is to contribute to changing the practices of criminal justice systems in Latin America in order to achieve greater transparency and efficiency as well as better conditions for the respect of human rights. The project promotes innovative solutions for solving concrete problems in implementing criminal justice reforms in selected countries of Latin America. Activities include training programs (on-site and distance learning) internships the publication of evaluation studies on judicial systems in Latin America local educational/outreach activities on criminal justice topics and the development of online information for use by stakeholders in the region.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2013 include: organization and delivery of the core regional training program on Criminal Procedure Reform with 241 graduates from 16 countries; participation of 690 legal professionals in various virtual training courses delivered by the Justice Studies Center of the Americas (known by its Spanish acronym CEJA); participation of approximately 22 800 legal professionals in 17 countries in local seminars and workshops to which CEJA provided support; participation of 29 individuals in internships in Canada with such organizations as the Ontario Crown Attorney’s Office the National Judicial Institute and the Public Prosecution Service of Canada; publication of 30 monitoring reports on justice system reforms and performance in member countries and 21 reports sharing innovative approaches to reform; and provision of technical assistance on judicial reform to nine countries. There is evidence that many CEJA participants have been able to use the skills and knowledge they acquired through participating in such training and activities in support to significant reforms in the criminal justice system.
