Project Description
The purpose of the Gender Equality Support Pilot Project (GESPP) was to strengthen the capacity of the Government of Nigeria and other key stakeholders to design and implement policies programming and instruments that promote gender equality in the health and governance sectors. Areas for strategic interventions have been: policy development and implementation; institutional strengthening and networking; and data collection action-oriented research and information dissemination. This project was the key instrument in assisting CIDA in identifying sustainable partnerships with government and civil society organizations to advance gender equality in Nigeria. The GESPP was managed as a decentralised fund responsive to the needs of Nigerian organizations and institutions. It provided assistance to eight sub-projects.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2009) include: (1) 100 advocates for the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) were identified a network was created to connect the advocates and training was provided in public speaking basic advocacy networking and media relations and on the contents of and the case for CEDAW. (2) Access to legal services was provided to 12 women who were elected to Parliament in 2007 to secure their mandates. (3) 46 civil society organizations and state government personnel in the states of Bauchi and Cross River received training on gender equality issues and tools.
