Project Description

The purpose of this project is to contribute to stabilization and peace within Sudan by strengthening child protection and basic services for conflict-affected boys and girls aged 10-18. It also supports the release and reintegration of these children into their communities while preventing future recruitment of children into armed forces and groups. This project also aims to increase the knowledge skills and resources among at-risk girls and boys in order to better equip them to protect themselves cope with their vulnerability and make productive contributions to their society. Finally the project aims to reinforce the ability of targeted government ministries and non-government organizations to deliver services to children including basic services (education and health) and child protection services (release reintegration and prevention of (re)recruitment into armed forces and groups).

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2011) include: financing of 19 small community based projects across the country all implemented by local Sudanese NGOs to strengthen the capacity of Sudan’s civil society. Most projects resulted in dozens of seminars exchange visits informal and professional training sessions and community meetings on a wide range of topic areas including: human rights awareness and the elimination of sexual discrimination to achieve gender equity in education employment and domestic activities; peace building and conflict mitigation to address tribalism domestic abuse etc.; environmental conservation sustainable development and resource management; health and lifestyle education; community and organizational leadership; capacity development for fledgling Community Based Organizations (CBOs) living and working with persons with disabilities and special needs. These results have contributed to: hundreds of Sudanese receiving training on human rights issues and community peace building activities; more than 90 % of targeted families being able to identify new techniques for caring and supporting disabled persons in their community; improved participation rate of girls in a community youth group for peace building; the integration of girls into what were previously only schools for boys.
