Project Description
The Deployment for Democratic Development project (DDD) aims to achieve stronger democratic institutions benefiting men and women in the participating countries. The DDD project is characterized by its rapid response. It provides high level Canadian expertise of a practical nature in response to field requests in the area of governance. The DDD mechanism contributes to improved public policy implementation and prevention of public sector corruption a more effective promotion and protection of human rights including improved planning and management of free and fair elections. The project has a ‘Knowledge-sharing’ component to ensure that the lessons learned by the initiatives are not lost and benefit stakeholders and partners around the world.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2013 include: sending governance experts on 87 initiatives in Africa the Americas the Middle East and Asia focused on public sector policy and administrative management (44%) public finance management (14%) and human rights (13%). To date 255 deployments of Canadian experts (84 women and 171 men) have taken place. Specific examples include: (1) increasing the responsiveness and accountability of public servants in Tanzania through social marketing campaigns; (2) establishing the Guyana Media Proprietors Association through which private media organizations can advocate for greater media freedom; (3) developing a draft human resources manual with Ghana's Public Service Commission; (4) training 100 managers and staff from Peru's Defensoria del Pueblo (Office of the Ombudsman) and thus improving their ability to plan monitor and evaluate services; and (5) assisting the Government of Honduras develop guidelines for inclusive policy development of its extractives industries. These activities are contributing to improved democratic governance.
