Project Description
The Gender Equality and African Regional Institutions (GEARI) project provides technical assistance to regional institutions to integrate gender equality (GE) into their policies and programs. Assistance includes needs assessments and training tool development action planning and monitoring and evaluation of progress in meeting targets that institutions set for themselves. The GEARI project supports four African regional institutions: Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) based in Ghana; Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) Secretariat in Uganda; and African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) in Ethiopia; and the Observatoire du Sahara et du Sahel (OSS) in Tunisia.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (2011) include: The GEARI project set a good foundation for each institution to improve the gender-sensitivity of their policies and programming. Participatory needs assessments critical reflection and active involvement of staff helped build their sense of ownership of the project and their commitment to improving equality in their organisation. The project helped institutions to better understand the importance of gender equality to development in their sectors of work. This contributed to each institution developing its own Gender Equality Action Plan. Three of the institutions are now well-placed to carry out their Action Plans beyond the end of project support and the fourth institution has made progress by beginning to discuss equality in its work with other regional networks.
