Project Description
This project aims to build the capacity of and strengthen governance activities within labour ministries and the business and labour organizations of the hemisphere. Through this project trade-related technical assistance identified by means of planning missions is provided to countries and organizations throughout the region. Activities may include strengthening occupational safety and health inspection systems strengthening labour codes and improving mediation and conciliation services. This is one of two parts of a project valued at $5 959 194.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 31 2013 include: The project funded 17 subprojects through which over 8 800 individuals representing governments employers and employee organizations participated in more than 300 workshops cooperation activities and meetings designed to among others: enhance awareness of internationally-recognized fundamental labour rights; enhance readiness to comply with national labour legislation; increase capacity of labour ministries to improve labour administration; and to enhance occupational safety and health schemes. One subproject successfully brought together parties including government employers and employees’ organizations from within a single country as well as country representatives on a sub-regional basis to discuss labour issues. Project activities have contributed to increasing the capacity of selected labour ministries and their social partners (employers’ and employees’ organizations) to engage in national social dialogue on labour rights and policies including gender issues. Another very successful subproject focused on training labour inspectors in Peru enhanced the capacity of the Peruvian Labour Ministry to improve administration in the area of labour inspection and thereby contributed to increasing the capacity of labour ministries and their social partners to modernize labour administration.
