Project Description
This project strengthens the livelihood means of the “ultra-poor” (poorest of the poor) by providing them with assets such as grants customized micro-enterprise development training essential health care and support from their fellow community members to bring them into the mainstream of their community. The project increases social and political support for pro-poor policies and enhances services and legal protection for the most vulnerable amongst the poor. Furthermore it provides an opportunity for donors to learn more about innovative poverty alleviation approaches.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of May 2009 include the provision of assets allowances and training to 100 000 ultra-poor Bangladeshi women. Two village poverty alleviation committees have repaired more than 24 000 houses installed 600 clean water wells and 4 500 latrines and helped enroll 7 700 children in school. In addition legal aid clinics have received 28 000 complaints from ultra-poor families on various issues of which more than 15 000 were resolved through alternative dispute resolution while 5 000 went to court with over 50% resolved in favour of ultra-poor families. On the health front the majority of pregnant women and infants were immunized.
