Project Description
This project aims to assess and bring public attention to the quality of government policies in advancing equity social inclusion and poverty reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Social Report Card is a study that analyzes the impact of government policies on the poorest and most vulnerable segments of society in eight Latin American countries in areas such as taxation labour markets fiscal policy education gender-based inequality discrimination and public services.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2012) include: A series of high-profile events were delivered and three policy briefs were prepared on (a) poverty and inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean (b) protecting the poor during times of economic instability and (c) the impact of fiscal policy on the poor. These policy briefs have been well received were distributed to over 200 policymakers and experts throughout the region and have been cited in the press. A report card grading methodology was developed to assess countries in the areas of (1) fiscal policy; (2) education health and infrastructure; and (3) social protection. Report card assessments were carried out in Argentina Bolivia Brazil Mexico and Peru. These activities have contributed to greater awareness of poverty and equality issues among key economic officials policy experts the media and civil society leaders and are improving the ability of these individuals to comment on and influence the policy agendas of Latin America and Caribbean governments.
