Project Description

This project aims to strengthen the capacity of governments to promote and protect children's rights in three countries in Latin America and the Caribbean region. State institutions communities and civil society organizations work together to: (1) implement and/or revise national plans to promote and protect children and adolescent rights; (2) improve civil registry systems for chidlren; (3) develop programs and policies that facilitate children's participation on issues that concern them; and (4) implement communication strategies to raise awareness of the rights of children and adolescents. The principal participants in the project are the governing national bodies responsible for children and adolescents.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of July 2011 include: Progress has been made in strengthening and updating national action plans for children in Colombia Guatemala and Jamaica; officials from state ministries and secretariats responsible for children have collaborated with the Inter-American Children’s Institute to produce technical papers containing recommendations for strengthening public policy; a pilot training session on the rights of children starting with the importance of child registration at birth was undertaken; country reports regarding child and adolescent participation in policies and programs that affect them were produced. These have contributed to increased capacity of governing bodies for children in each country to better coordinate implement and follow-up their plans of action for children and adolescents.
